Maths Tutor Tom Challener

I have taught in state and independent schools for the last 10 years. In the independent setting, I taught maths from year 7 to year 13 which prepared students for the iGCSE and also A-level and Further Mathematics. In the state settings, I have helped redesign the Schemes of Learning as part of my extra responsibilities for the school that I work at. This means that my subject knowledge of the current GCSE is extremely thorough.

I have also designed schemes of learning for tutoring to the 11+ exams. Having been through this process means that I am well suited at preparing primary school students for the maths part of the 11+ exams.

Give your child an academic advantage

Private tutoring helps children overcome their academic difficulties by providing them with personalized one-to-one teaching. The government has even introduced programs to support one-to-one tuition, indicating its recognition of tutoring’s benefits. Tutors offer individualized attention that improves academic skills and increases confidence. By focusing on a child’s unique learning style, tutors identify knowledge gaps, reinforce concepts and provide valuable feedback to both children and their parents. Private tutoring enhances students’ understanding, increases their motivation to learn, and leads to academic success.

Testimonials

What students had to say..

As someone who struggled with maths as a child I felt it was important for my daughter to gain a confidence with numbers that I always lacked. Working with Tom has been an absolute blast. Isabella engages in and enjoys every lesson and the feedback from her school about her improvement in the subject has been absolutely fantastic!

I started working with Tom for my foundation GCSE to improve my basic and advanced mathematics knowledge. This furthered my methods application and mathematical language (understanding what the question is asking). His support allowed me to improve my grade from a 3 to a grade 5 (the highest grade achievable on a foundation GCSE). This enabled me to win the most improved maths student award at the GCSE award ceremony. This grade allowed me to pursue a career in engineering. Achieving an: extended diploma BTec engineering level 3 (D*D*D*), Mechanical Engineering HNC (Distinction), Mechanical Engineering HND (Distinction), and a degree in Design Engineering. Tom’s teaching at GCSE made me the Engineer I am today, allowing me to pursue a career in the Aerospace and Defence sector, manufacturing parts for sector leaders.

Tom is a great tutor and very easy to talk too. He explains topics well and makes it easier to gain the understanding required. Gives lots of examples and walks you through problems before setting you some to do yourself. Highly recommend for 1 to 1 tuition.

Amanda Parent

Tom has helped our son reinforce his learning in Mathematics. He also keeps the lesson interesting. We`ve already started seeing results in about 2 weeks since he started tutoring our son. Highly recommended.

Resources

In Person & Online Tutoring

As a tutor living in Frinton-on-Sea, I offer home visits to the local area or if you would rather you can be tutored at my home in person. I am happy to tutor in Frinton, Walton, Kirby and Great Holland and would consider further towards Colchester.

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring is particularly effective. I began working with a tutee that lives in rural Norfolk. I wasn’t convinced myself that it would be as effective as in person tutoring but what I found was the exact opposite. I could use all of my electronic resources that I would normally print off with a snipping tool and have access to all the right problems at the right time for the student.

It turns out that it is more effective and also provides an easily accessible record of what has been done and achieved in a session for both myself and the tutee.

The added bonus is that you can be in any location in the world with internet connection. This is particularly useful for those that live in rural areas, overseas students as well as anyone that simply wants to work from their computer.

All you need for online tutoring is:

A writing pad such as an XP-pen Deco is ideal, but some tutees have managed well without, simply using a mouse.
